Sergey Sobyanin opened new sections of the Krutitskaya and Simonovskaya embankments on the left bank of the Moscow River — from the Novospassky Bridge to the Torpedo Stadium named after E.A. Streltsov. The Mayor of Moscow noted that the opening of the improved embankment sections is an excellent gift for City Day.
“Today we are opening two embankments. After a major reconstruction, the Krutitskaya embankment and the first section of the Simonovskaya embankment are opening. Moreover, the Simonovskaya embankment is divided into two directions: this is the transport direction and the pedestrian direction, where Muscovites can walk and enjoy the Moscow River. Next year, the Simonovskaya embankment will be extended to the Chagal embankment, and this will be a unified transport system. Overall, we have already reconstructed more than 100 kilometers of embankments in Moscow. Several dozen more kilometers are planned. We continue this work so that the Moscow River is accessible to all citizens,” said the Mayor of Moscow.
The newly constructed embankments, built according to modern Moscow standards of comfort, have two to three lanes for vehicle and surface urban transport traffic in each direction. The opening of the new section of Simonovskaya Embankment will reduce the load on Simonovsky Val street by 11 percent, Avtozavodskaya street by 10 percent, and Paveletskaya Embankment by nine percent. Plans include extending the M79 main route from Branch No. 1 of the V.P. Demikhov City Clinical Hospital on Velozavodskaya street along the new section of Simonovskaya Embankment to the Forever and River Sky residential complexes.
“As a result, the continuous line of Moscow’s embankments has become 2.2 kilometers longer and will soon reach the new residential quarters in ZIL. On the open sections, there are two to three lanes in each direction. They will relieve the streets Simonovsky Val, Avtozavodskaya, and Paveletskaya Embankment,” Sergey Sobyanin wrote on his channel.

An underground pedestrian crossing has been constructed near house No. 2 on Viktor Maslov Street. During the work, the bank slope of the Moscow River was also reinforced: to prevent landslides and soil erosion, retaining walls with a total length of 600 meters were erected. As part of the landscaping, a sports ground was equipped, a lawn covering one hectare was planted, and 450 square meters of flower beds were planted.
A new public space has been created on the section of Simonovskaya Embankment from the Torpedo pier to building 26, structure 5 in the Forever Residential Complex area — a pedestrian zone over a kilometer long, free from motor vehicles. The area has been landscaped, rest zones equipped, and lighting installed. Convenient paths have been arranged for pedestrians and cyclists. The embankment offers a beautiful view of the Moskva River and the opposite bank.
“Passengers of electric vessels of regular river transport can appreciate the renovated embankment from the water. Nearby is the Torpedo pier of the third route Novospassky — ZIL. Upcoming plans include completing the landscaping of the area adjacent to the Krutitskaya embankment, stretching 500 meters, as well as constructing the second section of Simonovskaya from the River Sky residential complex to the Third Transport Ring (TTK),” noted the Mayor of Moscow on his channel.

Improvement of the Moscow River embankments

“Now access to the embankment is available for all neighborhoods; it is well-maintained and nice. If you go further — there is a pedestrian embankment with benches where you can sit, and they have planted small trees. Then we will proceed to ZIL, then to the Marc Chagall embankment — and from there to the ‘Dream Island’ you can walk along the embankment, visiting Moscow’s parks,” noted Sergey Sobyanin.
The total length of the Moscow River shoreline within the Moscow Ring Road is about 200 kilometers. Until relatively recently, most of the capital’s embankments did not meet modern accessibility and comfort standards. The central granite embankments were mainly used as roads for vehicles and were uncomfortable for pedestrians. A significant part of the Moscow River shoreline was inaccessible to residents due to the industrial zones located along it. Due to worn-out infrastructure, the few pedestrian embankments were almost unused, and a large part of the coastal areas, especially in the lower course of the river, were ordinary undeveloped banks.
Returning the embankments to Muscovites is one of the most important improvement programs implemented by the Moscow Government in recent years. Since 2011, about 110 kilometers of embankments have been restored, including almost all historical granite embankments in the city center. Comfortable pedestrian spaces, areas for relaxation and sports, and observation decks have appeared there. Sidewalks were widened and renovated, some were equipped with bike-pedestrian paths, and thousands of trees and shrubs were planted.

Thus, today a significant part of the Moscow River’s shoreline meets modern standards of accessibility and comfort. For instance, in 2025, following improvements, a pedestrian promenade along the Moscow River was opened at the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve — a unique 3.5-kilometer-long promenade. Six embankments on the right bank of the Moscow River from the Garden Ring to Nagatinsky Zaton, with a total length of 11.4 kilometers, have been renovated: Shlyuzovaya, Derbenevskaya, Paveletskaya, Danilovskaya, Novodanilovskaya, and Nagatinskaya.
In 2026, in addition to the new sections of Krutitskaya and Simonovskaya embankments, a new 825-meter-long embankment was opened on the right bank of the Moscow River, located between the Shelepikhinsky and Belorussky bridges.
In addition, in 2024, more than 20 kilometers of granite embankments along the Yauza — the second major river in Moscow — were renovated. As a result, a unified comfortable pedestrian route was created from the high-rise building on Kotelnicheskaya Embankment to Veteranov Avenue in the eastern part of the capital.
Plans for the coming years include the reconstruction of sections of the Moscow River embankments: from Filevsky Park (Sail Bridge) to the P. N. Fomenko Workshop Theater, Shelepikhinskaya and Karamyshevskaya embankments, the Mark Chagall embankment from the Brothers Vesnin Boulevard to Project Passage No. 4062 (including the Novinki backwater), as well as the embankments in the territory of the Mnevniki floodplain. In addition, improvement of the embankment section from the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve to the Brateevo Cascade Park and a section of the embankment in the Nagatinskaya floodplain is planned.
