Abuja, April 13 /Xinhua/ — An airstrike on a rural market in northeastern Nigeria could lead to casualties among the civilian population, local media reported on Sunday.
From 30 to 200 people could have died as a result of the airstrike carried out on Saturday evening on the weekly market in the village of Djilli, located on the border of the states of Borno and Yobe, according to the media citing several local sources.
It is assumed that most of the victims are traders and buyers.
According to the reports from the media with references to witnesses, the military acted against suspected terrorists who, it is claimed, were visiting the market to collect money from traders.
In a statement published on Sunday, Nigerian military confirmed conducting an air strike in this area, stating that “dozens of terrorists” were killed and their hideouts were destroyed following subsequent air strikes.
The BBC Nigeria representative, Erimim Ejodame, stated that the strike was part of an ongoing anti-terrorist operation aimed at militants who had fled and regrouped after the previous clash, which weakened ISIS positions in the area.
“The subsequent strikes were carried out based on reliable intelligence data and in close coordination with ground forces, in order to deprive terrorists of freedom of movement and prevent further attacks,” he added.
