Driverless trams have been transporting passengers on route No. 10 for a year already. Since the launch, the innovative transport has completed over 4,200 trips without a single traffic violation. Currently, four driverless trams are operating in the capital. Some of them run in test mode: they study the route and create a high-precision map, said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maksim Liksutov.

Citizens note that the driverless trams run just as smoothly and carefully as regular trams with a driver. Many passengers do not even immediately notice that they are in innovative transport. Inside, the cabin looks familiar: the same comfortable seats, handrails, and charging ports. The only reminder of the tram’s uniqueness is the inscription “This is a driverless tram” on the side.
The capital’s trams are the first in the world to transport passengers in a fully driverless mode. The unique system belongs to the Government of Moscow, and specialists from the IT company MTTECH are involved in the development and support of the autonomous software. The capital’s technology operates more accurately and stably than foreign counterparts.
High-tech transport does not exceed speed limits and moves smoothly along the route. Autonomous technology minimizes the human factor. This makes trips more comfortable and safer, as well as strictly adhering to the schedule.
By the end of 2026, an additional 11 trams will be equipped with unmanned technologies, bringing the total number to 15 units.
The launch of fully autonomous trams became possible thanks to the adoption by the Government of Russia in the capital of an experimental legal regime (ELR). The document was prepared by the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, and Moscow became the first city in the country to initiate the adoption of the ELR for the launch of fully driverless urban transport.
