The architecture of mid-20th century Moscow is often represented by brick buildings. These structures are characterized by clean lines, yet they are not devoid of decorative details, among which the red brick cornices stand out especially. During the implementation of the capital renovation program of the housing stock in the capital, about 50 buildings with red cornices were renovated. This was reported by Moscow urban economy complex.
House with a red cornice on 1st Yamskaya Street
In 2024, major repairs were carried out on 1st Yamskaya Street (building 15/17). The five-story residential building was constructed in 1958 according to a custom design. At the level of the second floor, some windows are adorned with flower boxes, and the entrance groups are highlighted by portals. Around the perimeter of the building runs a multi-profile crowning cornice made of red brick.
Before starting the major renovation, a project was developed that took into account all the features of the building. Work to update the building’s facade began with washing and cleaning the exposed surfaces from dirt. Then, weathered joints were filled with a special construction compound, and individual brick segments were replaced. Damp areas were treated with antiseptic solutions. After completing the preparatory work, specialists proceeded to hydrophobize the brickwork — a procedure aimed at preventing aggressive effects of atmospheric precipitation. A thin and invisible-to-the-eye film protects all types of walls from moisture penetration, which over time can begin to destroy the building. In the final stage, the entrance groups and balconies were repaired, new double-glazed windows were installed in common areas, and downspouts were hung. In addition, the building’s plinth surfaces were plastered and then coated with a finishing decorative layer.
House with a brick cornice on Metallurgov Street
In 2025, the building located at Metallurgov Street, 23/13, was renovated. The cornice with inserts of red brick is decorated with a wide under-cornice belt. The five-story residential building was constructed in 1959 based on a standard project series. The building has an L-shaped plan. The facades are adorned with under-cornice belts placed below the roof eaves, inter-floor belts running around the building’s perimeter, as well as artistic masonry of the frieze and inter-floor belt, creating an original decorative pattern.
Specialists from the Moscow Capital Repair Fund created a customized work plan that took into account the building’s features. At the first stage, they washed the walls. Then the craftsmen applied anti-corrosion protection to the damp areas, restored the brickwork and weathered joints. At the final stage, they water-repellent treated the unpainted brick walls. Upon completion of the main facade works, they repaired the entrances and balconies, replaced the drip edges, and installed new downspouts. They also renovated the building’s socle — the old plaster layer was removed in order to plaster and paint the surfaces again. As part of the major renovation, the central heating risers in the building were replaced.
A house with a cornice made of dark red brick on Chugunnye Vorota Street
During the work, specialists use modern domestic materials and technologies. In 2026, as part of the capital repair program, the building on Chugunnye Vorota Street (house 7, building 1) is being refurbished. The five-story residential building was constructed in 1961 according to a standard design. The facade of the building is concise, with a crowning cornice and a belt of dark red bricks located around the perimeter.
Craftsmen are restoring the facade, repairing the roof, and updating the electrical supply system. Special attention is paid to bringing all facade elements into proper condition. Thus, at the first stage, they cleaned the facade from contaminants, worked on joint raking, restored the brickwork, and applied antifungal protection. After all preparatory measures, the exposed facade areas are waterproofed. At the final stage, new windows will be installed in common areas. The entrance groups and balconies will also be repaired, and the external drain system will be replaced. On the roof, the rafter system will be reinforced and the sheathing replaced, a temperature and humidity control system will be installed, and a walking deck will be laid.
