An important disclaimer is at the bottom of this article.

The Bank of Russia maintains restrictions on cash currency due to the sanctions in force against our country, which prohibit domestic financial institutions from acquiring cash currency of Western countries.

For citizens whose foreign currency account or deposit was opened before March 9, 2022, the limit on currency withdrawals remains in the amount of the balance of funds as of 00:00 Moscow time on that date, but not more than 10,000 US dollars or the equivalent amount in euros, regardless of the currency of the deposit or account, provided they have not previously exercised this option.

The remaining funds can still be received in rubles. The amount paid cannot be less than the amount calculated on the payment day according to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Russia for funds deposited in the account before September 9, 2022. Funds deposited after September 9, 2022, are issued at the bank’s exchange rate on the date of disbursement.

For banks saved a 6-month ban on charging citizens a commission when issuing currency from accounts or deposits.

Currency transfers without opening an account and via electronic wallets are issued in rubles. At the same time, the amount issued cannot be less than the amount calculated for the payment day according to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Russia.

For non-resident legal entities, cash issuance in US dollars, euros, British pounds, and Japanese yen is not provided until March 9, 2027; there are no restrictions for other currencies.

Legal entities that are residents may receive cash US dollars, euros, pounds sterling, and Japanese yen from their accounts for business trip expenses only, based on the payment standards established in accordance with the law, for the next six months. There are no restrictions on other currencies, provided that the operations comply with the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation.
