Baku, April 12 /Xin Hua/ — Azerbaijan on Sunday resumed the operation of its embassy in Tehran after more than a month since its closure. This was reported by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This event occurred against the backdrop of the cessation of hostilities on the territory of Iran and the announcement of a two-week ceasefire regime in the American-Iranian conflict.
At the initial stage, a limited number of diplomatic and administrative staff, including an ambassador, will work in the Azerbaijani mission. The expansion of activities is planned to be carried out gradually, taking into account security considerations and organizational aspects.
In Baku, it was stated that the prompt resumption of embassy operations underscores the special significance that Azerbaijan attaches to its relations with neighboring Iran. “Our country once again confirms its support for initiatives aimed at ensuring sustainable peace and stability in the region,” the foreign ministry’s statement says.
On March 6, Azerbaijani diplomatic personnel were evacuated from Tehran and Tabriz. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, explained this by security considerations amid escalating tensions.
Evacuation took place the day after the attack launched from Iranian territory by drones on the Azerbaijani Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
