Electric buses have been serving the capital’s routes for eight years already. Since 2018, over 3,100 modern eco-friendly vehicles have been delivered to Mosgortrans facilities. On average, they make more than 1.2 million trips daily, and the total number has exceeded 1.15 billion.
Comfortable and safe vehicles operate on 310 routes, delivering passengers to rail network stations as well as to important social, cultural, sports facilities, and points of interest.
“By order of the Mayor of Moscow, since 2018 we have been actively developing a network of environmentally friendly ground urban transport. During this time, the capital has become a leader among cities in Europe and the USA in the number of electric buses. This year, the Mosgortrans fleet has been replenished with over 150 innovative vehicles of Russian manufacture,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for transport and industry.
Achievements in numbers
The ground electric transport network covers all districts of Moscow and the nearby cities of the Moscow region. It accounts for one third of all ground transport routes in the capital. Since 2018, three electric bus depots have been opened in Moscow, nine existing Mosgortrans sites have been modernized to service modern vehicles, and more than 470 ultra-fast charging stations have been installed in depots and at 59 termini. In addition, every few years, improved models of electric transport arrive in Moscow.
According to data from Moscow Ecology Monitoring Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, thanks to the replacement of buses with electric buses in 2018–2025 (cumulative total), the city managed to avoid emitting about 1300 tons of pollutants into the atmosphere and about 300 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. In 2025 alone, it was possible to avoid emissions of about 380 tons of pollutants and about 110 thousand tons of greenhouse gas equivalent.
Main advantages of electric buses
Electric buses feature a smooth ride, absence of noise and vibrations — thanks to all these factors, an even higher level of travel comfort is ensured for passengers.
Electric buses from PJSC “KamAZ” and LiAZ run on city streets. Moscow’s order for the creation of new equipment supports employment in the regions and stimulates the development of domestic industry.
Electric transport provides a high level of service and meets the strictest safety standards. Low-floor electric buses are fully adapted for the comfort of passengers with limited mobility. For this, a fold-out ramp and driver call buttons are provided. If necessary, the driver will assist with entering and exiting the cabin. Bicycles, strollers, or large luggage can be conveniently placed on the storage platform. USB slots are installed in the cabin for charging gadgets. Media screens display current information about the nearest stops and transfers.
The climate control system allows maintaining an optimal cabin temperature at any time of the year. An air curtain activates when the doors are opened.
There are also buttons for targeted door opening. For passenger safety, the vehicle is equipped with cameras outside and inside. Near the doors are digital validators, which can be used to pay for the ride in any convenient way.
Since 2022, improved specification equipment has been supplied to the capital. Such electric buses feature adaptive interior lighting that changes from a cold tone to a warm one at 2:00 PM for passenger comfort. The front route indicator, enlarged by 18 percent, allows the number to be seen from a distance. The electric heater in the cabin is environmentally friendly and maintains an optimal temperature. The range has increased from 40–50 to 80–90 kilometers. At the same time, the vehicle’s weight has remained the same.
In 2025, the new generation KamAZ-52222 electric buses were put into service, featuring a redesigned interior layout, a 15 percent larger standing area, luggage storage spaces, and modified door structures. The climate control system became even more efficient, and light strips indicating opening and closing were added on the doors. The exterior appearance aligns even more closely with current trends in global industrial design.
This year, Mosgortrans parks began receiving electric buses with innovative charge replenishment technology. They are charged from stations with an inverted pantograph type. In addition, a new model, the “E-Citimax-9,” started testing on route No. 286 in the northeast of Moscow. For the first time, a medium-capacity electric bus went into operation on the line.
Eco-friendly equipment maintenance
More than 14 thousand highly professional drivers work at Mosgortrans. Over five thousand of them operate electric buses. The charging infrastructure is being expanded to service the new equipment.
Today, electric buses operate on 12 Mosgortrans sites. Moscow was the first in Russia to begin building modern electric bus fleets. In 2022, the first electric bus fleet in Russia and the largest in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra,” opened in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Okrugs (TiNAO). Eco-friendly vehicles began running routes in TiNAO. A year later, the “Mitino” fleet was built in the northwest. With its appearance, electric buses started running routes in 20 districts of the capital and two nearby towns in the Moscow region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative electric bus fleet — “Saltykovka” — began operating. It serves routes in the eastern part of the city.
