In Russia, August 31 is celebrated as Veterinary Worker’s Day. The Moscow Veterinary Committee shared how the city’s veterinary services contribute to the development of the industry across the country and what service advantages are available to Muscovites.

The Veterinary Automated System (VetAS) has simplified the work of veterinarians and obtaining assistance for pet owners. It allows booking appointments with specialists online, maintaining outpatient records, keeping track of pets, facilitates the search for lost animals, and the work with animals from shelters. In Moscow, VetAS has been operational since 2018. Currently, all 24 state veterinary clinics are connected to it, with about 90,000 new pets registered annually in the system.
The experience of the capital’s veterinary service is taken as a benchmark by the regions: a digital system is already being implemented in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug “YamalVet” based on a similar Moscow-based one — VetAS.
The superservice “My Pet” was developed jointly by metropolitan committees public services, veterinary medicine and Department of Information Technology. Since its creation in 2023, pet owners have used the service more than 700 thousand times.
From a war expert to a herpetologist
Any pets, including rare and exotic ones, can receive qualified care in the capital. Specialized experts—ratologists, herpetologists, and ornithologists—work in state veterinary clinics. In 2026, scheduling an appointment with them became even easier: in the online booking form on the mos.ru portal, along with services for dogs and cats, there appeared additional options for exotics.
Reception of pets at state eye clinics There are more than 400 veterinary specialists. Most of them are not only general therapists but also highly specialized doctors. These include ultrasound diagnosticians, cardiologists, ophthalmologists — more than 15 specialties in total. The capital’s veterinarians perform over 50,000 surgeries per year, tackling even the most complex cases, such as vision restoration operations, osteosynthesis, and even skin grafting.
Modern veterinary equipment also helps surgeons save pets’ lives. For example, endoscopes allow for minimally invasive extraction of foreign bodies and diagnosis of the gastrointestinal tract.
Since the beginning of 2026, specialists at state clinics have treated over 345 thousand pets. This is 11 thousand more than during the same period last year.
From dentistry to vaccination
It is believed that the success of veterinary care is achieved not only by working with the four-legged patient but also with its owner. Every year, specialists of the state veterinary service note an increase in owners’ responsibility for the health of their pets, attention to prevention, and proper care of the animal.
For example, the popularity of veterinary dental services grows by about 20 percent annually: if in 2024 there were 11,277 teeth cleaning and oral sanitation services provided, in 2025 — already 13,830, and in the incomplete 2026 — 9,610 services. The condition of the teeth reflects on the health of other systems and organs. Constant communication between doctors and owners, information sharing, and the promotion of dental care played a significant role in increasing the number of pet owners willing to clean and treat their pets’ teeth.
The activity of owners in the field of disease prevention — treatment against ecto- and endoparasites and vaccination — is consistently high in Moscow. This is partly why rabies has not been registered in the city for several years. The isolated cases recorded in 2024 and 2025 involved animals that arrived from other regions of Russia. Every year, about 500 thousand pets are vaccinated against rabies in the capital.
State veterinary service doctors emphasize the importance of healthy and proper feeding, as well as regular medical check-ups — all of this helps to prolong the life of a four-legged friend and improve its quality. Among the patients of veterinary clinics are long-livers — dogs and cats that are already over 20 years old.
