Turning to the classics for theater is not only about a new interpretation of plays but also about searching for a contemporary visual language. In new productions, directors actively use video and digital projections, creating a dynamic visual environment.
This has already been implemented in the play “Anna Karenina” based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy. Multimedia technologies here are used not as decorative background, but as part of the dramaturgy: the visual environment changes along with the development of the action, helps convey the emotional state of the characters, and transforms the stage space.
At the Moscow Theatre Center “Vishneviy Sad,” the season will begin on September 4 with a play “Boris Godunov” based on the play by Alexander Pushkin. It was directed by the artistic director of the theater, People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Vilkin. For the director, this is the realization of a long-held creative dream — to use Pushkin’s drama not only to address the country’s history but also to illuminate eternal themes: power, moral choice, and human responsibility.
The Time of Troubles is presented in the play through selected most significant episodes. This approach allows focusing not on a sequential recounting of historical events, but on human characters and conflicts that shape the dramatic action. The figure of Boris Godunov becomes the center of reflections on the price of power, the temptation of political influence, and the responsibility for decisions made.
