In the capital, the road markings were comprehensively changed on Serebryakova passage at three consecutive intersections: with Snezhnaia Street, with Nansen passage, and with Amundsen Street. The work was carried out under the project of the Moscow Government’s Traffic Management Center (TsODD).
“We continue to effectively improve traffic flow on city streets through targeted projects without large-scale construction. In Serebryakova Passage, we comprehensively changed the road markings at three intersections at once: we added lanes on the most congested approaches, separated traffic flows, and made driving trajectories clearer. Now cars going straight will be able to pass through intersections without unnecessary lane changes. According to preliminary assessments by the TsODD specialists, the capacity of Serebryakova Passage will increase. Under the instruction of Sergey Sobyanin, we continue to implement such projects as part of the transport development strategy through 2030,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Serebryakov Passage connects several major streets in the northeast of Moscow. Specialists from the Traffic Management Center analyzed traffic at three intersections. The analysis showed that in certain directions, the number of lanes before the intersections was insufficient for the existing flow, and drivers going straight had to additionally change lanes after passing the intersections.
At the intersection with Snezhnaya Street when moving towards Yaroslavskoye Highway, there used to be two lanes for going straight. According to the new scheme, a third lane for going straight has been added before the intersection. In addition, for cars exiting Snezhnaya Street onto Serebryakova Passage, guiding markings have been applied: they define a clearer trajectory through the intersection.
At the intersection with Nansen passage on the south side, there used to be two lanes leading to the crossroads. Now there are three: the streams of cars continuing straight and turning left have been separated into different lanes.
On the north side, previously from one lane before the intersection, it was possible to go straight, turn left, and turn right. Because of this, cars turning right delayed drivers moving in other directions. According to the new scheme, the right turn was left only at the adjacent Projected Passage No. 3660.
Another feature of the previous scheme was related to the movement trajectories through three consecutive intersections. At the intersections with Snezhnaya Street and Nansen Passage, the markings directed vehicles going straight into the lane for turning right, and at Amundsen Street — into the lane for turning left. After that, drivers had to change lanes, which increased the risk of conflict situations.
Under the new scheme, the trajectories at all three intersections were changed according to a unified principle: vehicles going straight continue along their lane without additional lane changes. Only drivers who need to turn are required to change lanes. Guiding islands were additionally applied: they visually separate the flows and make movement through the intersections clearer.
According to preliminary estimates by the TsODD specialists, the entire set of changes will increase the throughput capacity of Serebryakov Passage and Nansen Passage.
