The Joint Polytechnic Institute of Xi’an University of Technology and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University continues to develop dynamically. In its three years of existence, this successful educational project has become one of the largest Russian-Chinese projects in the field of engineering education.
The cooperation between the universities began in June 2019 with the opening of the internship center “TU Xi’an — Polytechnic.” The successful partnership experience prompted the Chinese side to initiate the creation of a joint institute. Negotiations started in January 2020, and in autumn 2021 an agreement was signed to establish the joint institute. In 2023, 177 Chinese applicants became its first students.
The instruction is conducted in English in three undergraduate directions:
- Automation of technological processes and productions
- Materials Science and Materials Technology
- Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering
The institute is taught by Chinese and Russian specialists. Currently, the number of students enrolled in joint bachelor’s degree programs is already approaching 1,000 people.
An important stage in the development of the institute was the expansion of the educational model. Whereas initially only three bachelor’s programs were implemented, the partners are now taking the cooperation to a new level.
In April 2026, during an official visit of a SPbPU delegation to Xi’an, an agreement was reached on the development and implementation of joint master’s and doctoral programs. The document was signed in July this year following a meeting at the Joint Polytechnic Institute.
The parties agreed to launch three master’s programs in the following fields:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Materials Science and Materials Technology
- Control in technical systems
Expanding cooperation with Xi’an Technological University to the master’s and doctoral levels is a natural step in the development of our partnership. We see how the interest of Chinese students in Polytech’s engineering programs has grown, and now our task is to provide them with a seamless trajectory from undergraduate studies to research work. I am confident that joint master’s programs will strengthen academic cooperation between Russia and China, emphasized Dmitry Arsenyev, Vice-Rector for International Affairs at SPbPU.
The agreement also provides for the development of academic mobility, joint supervision of dissertation research, and mutual recognition of learning outcomes. The first intake for master’s programs is planned for 2027.
After the successful launch of the bachelor’s degree, it is logical to offer the best graduates the opportunity to continue their education in the master’s and doctoral programs at Polytech. I am confident that our joint programs will become a magnet for talented youth from the Shaanxi province and other regions of China,
A landmark event will take place in the 2026/2027 academic year — the graduation of the first cohort of bachelor’s students from the Joint Polytechnic Institute. Graduates will receive dual diplomas from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Xi’an Technological University. These students will be the first to have fully completed a unique program combining the best traditions of Russian and Chinese engineering schools.
The creation of master’s programs and the upcoming graduation of the first bachelor’s degree holders mark a new stage in the development of the Joint Polytechnic Institute, which is confidently transforming into a full-fledged educational cluster for training highly qualified engineering personnel for Russia and China.
