Beijing, April 11 /Xinhua/ — The chairman of the Kuomintang party of China, Chen Liwen, who is on a visit to the mainland China, said on Friday in Beijing that she is ready to “do anything as long as it contributes to strengthening peace between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait.”
Zheng Liwen, head of the Kuomintang party delegation, is visiting the mainland of China at the invitation of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and General Secretary Xi Jinping. On Friday morning, Xi Jinping met with Zheng Liwen in Beijing.
This is the first time in the last ten years that the chairman of the Kuomintang party heads a delegation to visit the mainland part of the country.
At a press conference held during a visit by the delegation, Chen Liwen stated that the meeting of the leaders of the two parties took place in a warm and frank atmosphere. According to her, the leaders of the Kuomintang and the CPC met again – after a decade, demonstrating a common desire, goodwill, and sincere intentions regarding the peaceful development of relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
She also spoke about the delegation’s trip to Nanking and Shanghai and expressed gratitude to the host side on the mainland for the thoughtful organization of the events.
Chien Li-wen noted that since assuming the position of chairman of the Kuomintang party, she has felt persistent calls from various sectors of Taiwan to activate cross-strait exchanges and support peace in the Taiwan Strait region. She added that a scenario of tension between the two shores would be one that no one wants to see.
John Lieven emphasized that under the condition of recognizing the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence,” mutual goodwill, communication, and dialogue between the two shores of the strait are possible.
The chairman of the Kuomintang party also called on the relevant political figures in Taiwan to make the right choice and not to neglect their duties to accommodate certain party or personal interests.
The visit of the Kuomintang party delegation to the mainland part of the country began on Tuesday and will continue until Sunday.
