At the intersection of Zaitsevskoye and Borovskoye Highways in the Novomoskovsky Administrative District, re-marking was carried out according to the project of the Centre for Traffic Management (CTM). This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.
“On the instructions of Sergey Sobyanin, within the framework of the transport development strategy until 2030, we continue to improve the transport infrastructure in TiNAO. We have re-marked an important intersection for the district at Zaitsevsky and Borovsky highways according to the TsODD project. Previously, it was congested in two directions from the Minsk highway and when moving from the MKAD: additional lanes were added to them. For the comfort of drivers and safe traffic, guiding islands were also arranged. As a result, travel time has been reduced by five minutes, and the throughput here has increased by 42 percent,” noted Maxim Liksutov.
The intersection of Zaitsevsky and Borovsky highways is a popular and significant transportation hub. It connects routes from Moscow to Aprelevka and from the Minsk highway towards the Kiev highway. With the development of the district’s territory, the intensity of traffic flows has increased, which affected the congestion of the intersection. During peak hours, delays more often occurred on two of the four directions — when moving from the Minsk highway and from the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) towards the outskirts.
Moreover, the traffic signal phase settings were insufficient: such a solution could have redistributed delays to other directions. Therefore, according to the TSODD project, re-marking was carried out on the approaches to the intersection. On Zaitsevskoye Highway, when moving from Minsk Highway, a third lane was added, and on Borovskoye Highway when moving from MKAD—a third lane and a guiding island. Another island was arranged directly at the intersection to separate traffic flows.
As a result, according to the calculations of the TSOD specialists, travel time has been reduced by five minutes, and the throughput capacity of the routes has increased by 42 percent. The average daily travel speed has increased by five percent. Now, traffic flows are more evenly distributed across the main routes, and movement in the section is safer.
Relabelling projects
In the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky districts, TSODD specialists annually develop projects to improve traffic management. Some of these are re-marking solutions. This is one of the efficient and quick ways to increase the capacity of roads, making trips more comfortable even on highways with heavy traffic.
For example, within the framework of such projects, additional and dedicated lanes were created on the Kiev highway from the Moscow Ring Road to Vnukovo airport. Comprehensive road marking was also carried out on the road between the villages of Krasnoye and Oznobishino, covering a length of about 13 kilometers. This helped improve traffic safety and reduce the number of lane changes.
Since 2018, the capital has been actively implementing re-marking projects: around 100 such solutions are developed annually. With their help, travel conditions can be improved without extra costs and long lane closures. Adding lanes through re-marking is faster than the usual road widening by construction. This is especially effective in heavy traffic conditions — both in limited urban spaces and on high-speed highways with intense flow.
