Hefei, August 25 /Xinhua/ — The “Science Island,” located in the suburb of Hefei city in Anhui province /East China/, is renowned for its unique research facilities, including the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak /EAST/, known as China’s “artificial sun.”

Currently, the “Island of Science” is the forefront of research in controlled thermonuclear fusion in China and an important hub for international cooperation in the global thermonuclear field. Every year, hundreds of foreign scientists come here to exchange experiences and engage in collaboration.

Russian woman Viktoria Saklakova holds the position of manager of the international cooperation department at the Institute of Plasma Physics, part of the Hefei Institute of Materials Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She actively facilitates the exchange of experience between scientists, the organization of joint experiments, and the training of young international personnel—both Chinese and foreign—in the field of nuclear fusion.

V. Saklakova studied at a ballet school in childhood and performed in 2008 on the stage of the Harbin Grand Theatre. Three months of life and work in Harbin awakened in her a sincere affection for this region, and she began to study Chinese.

During her master’s studies, she attended Harbin Polytechnic University and studied physics, then earned a doctorate at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei.

After graduating in 2023, she decided to stay in China to pursue a career in the field of thermonuclear energy. She facilitated cooperation between the Institute of Plasma Physics and international organizations and scientific institutes, witnessed firsthand how China’s “artificial sun” breaks world records, and collaborated with scientists from around the globe in this cutting-edge field.

In recent years, China has accelerated research in the field of nuclear fusion and repeatedly broken world records. For example, the Institute of Plasma Physics, where V. Saklakov works, has established stable partnerships with more than 120 research institutions from over 50 countries.

She emphasized that Russia is the birthplace of the tokamak technology and possesses deep technological developments, as well as resources of nuclear power plants for testing new generation materials for nuclear fusion. China, in turn, demonstrates growing scientific strength and has unique research equipment.

According to her, this is exactly what creates the ideal conditions for mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Russia in the field of thermonuclear energy.

“The great progress made by China in the field of controlled nuclear fusion is admired by colleagues around the world,” noted V. Saklakova. She also added that the heightened attention China pays to scientific and technological innovation, as well as openness to cooperation with scientists from around the world, has enabled the achievement of the “Chinese speed” in the field of controlled nuclear fusion, which attracts the attention of the entire world.

Speaking about the future, V. Saklakova plans to continue promoting international cooperation, expanding the list of organizations with which regular contacts are maintained, and conducting more joint experiments with colleagues related to the next generation of the “artificial sun.”

“Thermonuclear fusion is a matter that requires the joint efforts of several generations of scientists. I am ready to dedicate my entire life to it,” the girl said.
