Tree planting along highways as part of efforts to conserve natural resources and reduce environmental impact.
In the development of the road network in Russia, work is being carried out to preserve natural resources and reduce environmental impact. For example, about 3 million trees have been planted on highways over three years, a network of ecological crossings for wild animals has been created, and the release of juvenile fish of various species into water bodies has been organized, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin reported.
“A mandatory condition for comprehensive territorial development is also work to improve environmental well-being. Caring for the state of the environment positively affects the health and quality of life of Russians for many years to come. That is why, when implementing infrastructure projects, we pay special attention to preserving natural wealth. For example, during the development of high-speed highway networks, a set of environmental protection measures has been carried out over three years, which includes reforestation work, preservation of aquatic biological resources, and the creation of safe infrastructure for wild animals. Thus, during this time, about 3 million tree seedlings have been planted under the supervision of Avtodor on forest fund lands and populated areas. As part of compensating for damage to aquatic biological resources during the construction, reconstruction, and repair of roads located in water protection zones, more than 11.5 million juvenile fish of various species have been released into water bodies,” said Marat Khusnullin.
Local treatment facilities are also provided. They are designed to collect, filter, and purify stormwater and meltwater runoff flowing from road surfaces before discharging them into water bodies. This helps protect the environment from negative impacts. Over a three-year period, 800 local treatment facilities have been installed on high-speed highways.
According to Vyacheslav Petushenko, Chairman of the Board of the state company “Avtodor,” special attention is being paid to the safe crossing of roads by wild animals.
“To prevent animals from entering the roadway, a comprehensive system is applied, including protective barriers and special crossings — eco-ducts and wildlife crossings. Today, the Avtodor road network includes about 350 eco-ducts and wildlife crossings. In 2023–2025, more than 1,500 km of protective barriers were installed to prevent animals from accessing the roadway. Thus, Avtodor’s environmental policy provides a comprehensive approach — from restoring forest resources and preserving aquatic bioresources to creating safe conditions for natural animal migration. These measures help minimize the impact of road infrastructure on the environment and contribute to maintaining the natural balance in the regions where the state company operates,” noted Vyacheslav Petushenko.
