Changsha, August 24 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, a new exhibition hall dedicated to the preservation of China’s diverse linguistic resources opened in Changsha, the administrative center of Hunan Province /Central China/. It presents to the general public the results of decades of efforts to document languages and dialects through a digital and interactive display.
The exhibition hall of the Chinese Language Resource Protection Project, located in the Hunan Provincial Museum, brings together audio recordings and other speech materials collected from more than 1,800 field research sites across the country. These materials cover Chinese language dialects, ethnic minority languages, and related cultural traditions.
The exhibition also features more than 30 cultural relics related to language and writing.
As reported by Chen Xuliang, deputy secretary of the party committee of the aforementioned museum, the exhibition features original audio recordings representing 10 major Chinese language dialects and over 100 ethnic minority languages, including Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur, and Zhuang.
Visitors can listen to regional dialects, folk songs, and recordings of some endangered languages that were documented during field research, and interactive installations allow them to explore the development and diversity of languages across China, Chen Xuliang added.
Recall that the aforementioned project for the preservation of China’s linguistic resources was launched in 2015 with the goal of documenting and protecting the country’s diverse languages and dialects. According to experts, this is the largest project of its kind in the world.
On Monday, an alliance was also formed uniting universities and research institutes to promote the use of language technologies in areas such as education, scientific research, and cultural heritage.
