Beijing, August 24 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) of China extended the “yellow” alert for heavy rains and the “blue” alert for the 19th typhoon of the year. It is forecasted that torrential rains and strong winds will affect several regions of the country.
According to the NMC data, from 8 a.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday, heavy rains are expected in the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Taiwan, Hainan, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Yunnan, Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang.
Heavy downpours will hit the southeastern areas of Zhejiang Province, the eastern coastal areas of Fujian Province, the northern part of Guangdong Province, most of Taiwan Island, and the eastern areas of Liaoning Province. In some areas of Taiwan, especially heavy rain is expected, with precipitation amounts reaching from 250 to 300 millimeters.
The NMC noted that in the affected areas, short-term heavy rains with an hourly precipitation intensity of 20 to 50 millimeters are expected, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
Meanwhile, the 19th typhoon of the year was located in Beibu Bay as of 5 a.m. Monday, approximately 185 kilometers southwest of Beihai city in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. The maximum wind speed near its center reached 23 meters per second.
The typhoon is expected to move eastward from Monday evening, then shift northward at a speed of 5 to 10 kilometers per hour, gradually approaching the coastal areas from Guangxi to the western part of the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong Province.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations recommended that local authorities take precautionary measures.
