Moscow is actively developing the game development industry and attracting new talent. Today, more than 260 specialized companies are operating in the capital. More than half of them are engaged in game development and publishing.

Young professionals can start a career in the video game industry in six areas. These are game development and publishing, technological infrastructure, production of gaming technologies and equipment, digital distribution, as well as eSports and investments.

In the Moscow cluster of video games and animation, it was noted that modern game development represents a branched ecosystem. Here, individuals with technical, creative, humanitarian, economic, and managerial specializations can build their careers. Programmers, game designers, scriptwriters, artists, animators, testers, producers, marketers, analysts, lawyers, as well as specialists in community engagement and business development work on creating a single game product.

The largest sectors of the industry remain video game development and publishing. In addition to programmers and game designers, these teams need 2D and 3D artists, animators, sound engineers, scriptwriters, localizers, testers, game producers, project managers, visual effects specialists, as well as promotion experts.

What specialists are needed by Moscow companies

About 18 percent of companies in the capital are technical operators. They provide server infrastructure, payment and advertising solutions, analytics and monetization, as well as create graphics, audio, and video content for gaming projects. This segment may employ system engineers, information security specialists, data analysts, DevOps engineers, technical artists, sound directors, and digital monetization specialists.

A separate career path is created by developers of technologies and gaming devices.

About three percent of Moscow companies are engaged in the development of game engines, SDKs and APIs, hardware platforms, components, and peripherals. Such employers need software developers, engineers, technical designers, specialists in user experience, industrial design, and equipment testing.

About six percent of Moscow companies represent digital distribution platforms. This segment is actively developing following the departure of some foreign services and the expansion of domestic video game sales channels. Platforms need IT specialists, product managers, editors, as well as specialists in developer relations, licensing and content moderation, customer service, CRM, and digital marketing.

About 12 percent of Moscow companies operate in the esports segment. Organizing tournaments and broadcasts creates career opportunities for producers, directors, commentators, analysts, referees, technical specialists, team managers, and partnership integration specialists.

About three percent of companies also form an investment division. It can be a place where analysts, financial managers, business development specialists, and lawyers working with intellectual property can find opportunities to realize their potential.

The notion that video game development is predominantly about programmers has long been debunked in the industry. Today, it is a market at the intersection of technology, design, media, marketing, finance, and the events industry. A young specialist can enter game development with a wide range of skills. However, it is important to understand in which part of the production chain those skills will be most useful. The mission of the Moscow video games and animation cluster is to make the professional ecosystem more open, to help beginners see possible career paths, and to help companies find the necessary personnel.
