Moscow museums are actively developing cooperation with cultural institutions from various regions of Russia: organizing joint exhibitions, sending artifacts for temporary display, exchanging professional experience, and creating projects taking into account the local cultural context. In recent years, the collections of capital museums have been presented in Kazan, Krasnoyarsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Petrozavodsk, Saint Petersburg, and other cities. This work allows residents of the regions to see unique works of art and historical objects, and enables museums to expand professional connections and form a unified cultural space in the country.

Thus, from 2020 to 2026 State Museum of the Defense of Moscow held 11 exhibitions in the regions of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Belarus, and Serbia. Items telling about the events of the Battle of Moscow period, as well as about the heroes of the special military operation, were showcased at the venues of the Museum Complex in memory of the Hero of the Soviet Union Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, the State Museum-Reserve of S.A. Yesenin, the Memorial Complex “Brest Hero Fortress,” in the Alexandrovskaya Sloboda of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve, and a number of others. In total, 69 unique items from the museum’s collections were presented for temporary exhibition in the regions.

Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve regularly transports masterpieces from its collection to exhibitions in regional partner museums. For example, in 2022, they organized the project “ONO. The Irrational in Late Soviet Painting and Applied Art” in Petrozavodsk. The exhibition featured dozens of applied art works from the 1960s-1980s from the Tsaritsyno collection as well as works by contemporary authors from the collection of the Kizhi State Museum-Reserve. And at the end of this summer, the National Gallery of the Komi Republic will host the project “Basic Elements. Works of Authorial Decorative and Applied Art from the Collection of the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve.” The cultural institution also collaborates with regions as a host venue: in particular, within the framework of the project “In Search of Folk Art” (2022–2023), satellite exhibitions presented works from Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Yakutia, and other cities.

Actively showcases its exhibits in the regions The museum-reserve “Ostankino and Kuskovo.” For example, in 2022, the institution presented 167 items from its collection at the exhibition “Egyptomania. On the 200th Anniversary of the Decipherment of Egyptian Hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion” at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. More than seven hundred artifacts in the Egyptian style were displayed in two grand halls of the Nevsky enfilade of the Winter Palace: sculpture, painting, furniture, stone-carving and jewelry art, costumes. The main exhibit was an Egyptian service from the collections of the Ostankino and Kuskovo museum-reserve, produced at the Sèvres manufactory by order of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808 following the expedition to Egypt and presented by him to Alexander I.

The contemporary art festival “Territory. Krasnoyarsk”, which took place in 2021, is a joint project of the International Festival – School of Contemporary Art “Territory”. Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) and the largest Russian gold mining company Polyus, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. MMOMA presented the exhibition by Sasha Frolova “Forms of the Wonderful,” specially prepared for the festival. In addition, in 2021 the museum presented the exhibition “The Unnamable” at the Volga-Vyatka branch of the A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. It included some of the most vivid and significant works by authors who hold an important place in the history of domestic art from the 1920s to the present day. The theme and specifics of the exhibition were shaped through dialogue with the artistic community of Nizhny Novgorod. Local artists participated in the project.

Museum of Moscow In 2024, together with the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan and with the support of the local Ministry of Culture, they launched the project “Kazan Without Outskirts.” It became a continuation of the flagship project of the capital’s museum “Moscow Without Outskirts,” which studies the local identity of urban districts.

Such regional cultural cooperation allows the country’s residents to experience unique masterpieces in reality, rather than in digital space. Capital museums have the opportunity to showcase their exhibits and exchange experience, while regional ones attract additional audiences and improve their qualifications through joint work with leading specialists. This practice contributes to the creation of cultural infrastructure, erases boundaries between the center and regions, forming a unified museum space of the country.

A large-scale project appeared on the mos.ru portal special project, dedicated to the development of key areas of Moscow. These include transport, industry, healthcare, education, sports, and construction. The special project helps to learn how the capital has changed over the past years, what initiatives aimed at making citizens’ lives even more comfortable are currently being implemented, and what awaits Moscow and its residents in the near future.
