The UN Secretary-General sharply condemned the large-scale attack by Russian armed forces using missiles and drones on Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine.
According to data presented at a briefing in New York by the UN spokesperson, the strike resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of civilians and caused serious damage to civilian infrastructure. Stéphane Dujarric described the incident as “another tragic example of the alarming trend of increasing strikes on densely populated areas.”
The press secretary reported that the head of the UN is deeply concerned about the ongoing escalation of the conflict, including strikes affecting the territory of the Russian Federation. He emphasized that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are a direct violation of international humanitarian law, regardless of where they occur, and must be stopped immediately.
The Secretary-General, according to Dujarric, once again called for an urgent de-escalation that should lead to a complete, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire, as well as a just, sustainable, and comprehensive peace in accordance with international law, the UN Charter, and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The press secretary reminded that the Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs is currently in Kyiv. Tom Fletcher reported on Thursday that he was shocked by what he saw—the aftermath of “yet another deadly night for civilians, when homes, hospitals, and a school were hit.”
The UN and the Organization’s humanitarian partners promptly came to the aid of municipal services and provided the affected people with medical and psychological support, as well as hot meals, construction materials, and financial assistance.
While in Kyiv, Fletcher held meetings with senior Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Andriy Sybyha, to whom he expressed condolences regarding the recent attacks. The Deputy Secretary-General also met with First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal and Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity of Ukraine Denys Ulyutin.
