82-year-old Lu Anqin from Heilongjiang Province is the owner of the “Grandma Lu’s Guesthouse” in Sizjingyu Village, Jizhou District, Tianjin City. “Grandma Lu,” as she is affectionately called by both visitors and neighbors, has opened a stone painting gallery at the guesthouse.
Liu Anqin has no formal art education; she began painting at a university for the elderly after retiring. Six years ago, she moved to Tianjin following her son. This spring, she rented a house with a yard in the village of Sicjinyu, known as the “stone village,” where she opened a guesthouse and simultaneously set up a small creative corner.
The distinctive atmosphere of antiquity in the village of Sizjinyu inspired Liu Anqin to new creativity: she began painting on stones. Compared to paper, the surface of the stone is rough and has an uneven texture, so drawing lines and applying paint on stone is much more difficult. Despite her advanced age, Liu Anqin sits focused at the table for several hours to complete a single work.
In just a few months, this small art gallery combined with a guesthouse has become a popular attraction in the village. Every time tourists stay at the guesthouse or simply come to look, Liu Anqing enthusiastically tells them about his paintings.
