Washington, April 9 /Xinhua/ — U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday strongly urged Iran to stop charging fees with tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
“There are reports that Iran is charging fees for tankers passing through the Hormuz Strait. It would be better if they didn’t do this, and if they do, it is better to stop it now!” — he wrote on the social network Truth Social.
Earlier in the day, the former head of the White House told ABC News that he is considering the possibility of creating a “joint venture” with Iran to collect fees from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil is transported. He called it a “wonderful thing.”
On Wednesday, D. Trump also stated on social media that the USA could earn “big money” by “helping increase traffic in the Ormuz Strait.”
Iran demands that oil tankers pay a transit fee of 1 US dollar per barrel for passage through the strait, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
Currently, very few ships are crossing the strait. After the announcement of a ceasefire, two non-Iranian oil tankers passed there on Tuesday, the New York Times reported on Thursday citing the company Kpler, which specializes in tracking vessels.
