Shanghai, August 20 /Xinhua/ — The East China megacity of Shanghai on Wednesday launched 100 AI-based micro tourist service terminals throughout the city to enhance travel experiences for the growing number of tourists in the summer season, local authorities reported.

These microterminals operate based on a special AI agent called “Hu Xiaoyou,” capable of offering services ranging from real-time navigation and translation to recommendations of attractions and ticket booking. They can also create personalized travel itineraries for users.

Operators stated that the microterminal database contains over 84 thousand records of cultural events, tourist attractions, and sports events in Shanghai, and is directly linked to 14 thousand links for ticket purchases and shopping.

The machines support 10 languages – Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Thai, Russian, and Arabic – and accept payments in more than 120 currencies.

Volunteers will also be engaged to provide consulting and assistance to visitors with additional needs at microterminal locations in major hotels, tourist information centers, event venues, key business districts, and scenic spots throughout the city.

The functionality of microterminals will be further expanded, and the number of service points will increase to form a city-wide service network, said Zhong Xiaomin, head of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism.

As China continues to improve its summer tourism offerings, Shanghai has become a top destination for travelers in inbound tourism, impressed by the “China Cool” trend.

According to official data, in the first half of 2026, Shanghai received 5.3 million inbound travelers, which was 27.82 percent more than the same period last year. -0-
