In 2026, NSU returned to the top 100 of the QS subject ranking in Archaeology (last year it occupied the 101-150 place). Only three Russian universities are positioned in the ranking, among them NSU took 1st place (rank 51-100), followed by MSU (101-150) and Altai State University (151-200).
When compiling the subject rating for the direction “Archeology”, four factors were taken into account: academic reputation (its weight — 70%), reputation among employers (10%), citation (10%) and the scientometric indicator H-Index (Hirsch index; 10%). The main factors that influenced the improvement of NSU’s positions are reputation among employers and the growth of scientometric indicators: citation of publications and the H-Index (Hirsch index).
According to employer reputation, NGU rose from 95th place in the world in 2025 to 35th in 2026. Among Russian universities, employers ranked NGU 2nd (after MGU) in 2026 (it was 4th in 2025).
— The demand for NGU graduates in the labor market is closely linked, among other things, to “precise” interaction with potential employers, which is reflected in the reputational rating. The Career Development Center closely cooperates with external partners. We organize individual career events for students of various specialties. Thus, we have a humanities day, a medics’ day, a lawyers’ day; we organize large-scale Career Days and a Career Forum.Despite the fact that our graduates are in demand in the labor market, such events attract employers because personal communication with today’s students — tomorrow’s graduates — becomes very valuable and important for them.— commentedSvetlana Dovgal, directorCareer Development Center NGU.
According to the citation of publications among Russian universities, NSU took 2nd place in 2026 (it was 4th in 2025). According to the Hirsch index, it took 1st place among Russian universities (it was 3rd in 2025). According to the fourth indicator “Academic Reputation,” NSU took 1st place among Russian universities in 2026 (in 2025 it was 2nd after MSU).
High positions of the NGU in the ranking are associated with the increasing prominence of archaeological research conducted by Siberian archaeologists, primarily by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography (IAET) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. At the Department of Archaeology and EthnographyHumanitarian Institute (HI) NGU, as well as in the university in general, was established the principle laid down by Lavrentyev when founding the Novosibirsk Scientific Center — the maximum integration of the Scientific Research Institutes and the university.
—Almost the entire faculty staff are part-time employees who are simultaneously active researchers. This allows for the constant updating of the actual teaching content, placing the right emphasis when students select their qualification and graduation works in accordance with current issues of leading research, actively involving students in the scientific work performed, adjusting and introducing taught disciplines taking into account the requirements of modern science.A whole series of discoveries made in recent years by Siberian scientists, especially the active publication of results in leading international journals, has undoubtedly made Siberian archeology more recognizable and well-known., — commentedAndrey Krivoshapkin, Acting Head of the Department of Archeology and Ethnography of the GI NSU, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Among the recent discoveries that are widely known and well publicized are the results of international and interdisciplinary studies of the earliest history in Altai. These are the Denisova Caves, Chagyrskaya, named after academician Okladnikov. Paleogenetic, anthropological, and archaeological studies of Denisovans and Neanderthals have made a breakthrough in what seemed to be an already established interpretation of anthropogenesis.
The Paleolithic, of course, is not limited to discoveries.
—Multiyear studies of the Neolithic, Bronze Age, the era, and nomads have led to a surge in ranked publications for these periods, again contributing to recognition and, accordingly, the academic reputation of Siberian archaeologists. To some extent, international activity also arises; primarily, these are joint complex expeditions abroad or the participation of our scientists in such projects together with colleagues from Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Vietnam, and France. Almost all these expeditions involve students and postgraduate students of NSU., — added Andrey Krivoshapkin.
In my opinion, Andrey Krivoshapkin, in addition to the landmark articles in international publications (publications on Denisovans and Neanderthals in Nature, Science, PNAS, PloS One, etc.), played a major role in the creation of the archaeological issue of the “Bulletin of NSU” in the top ranking database Scopus.
—The fact that the NRU is now in the QS top 100 for archaeology, and in first place among Russian universities, is the natural result of many years of research and discoveries made jointly by IAET and the university, becoming widely known to the international scientific community,— summed up Andrey Krivoshapkin.
