From August 17 to 27, the Summer System Bootcamp is taking place at Novosibirsk State University, organized with the support of the partner company YADRO. It has become a platform for intensive project work. Unlike educational intensives dominated by lectures, here the main focus is on practice. Students have formed teams based on their interests to solve applied problems in low-level programming and system development under the guidance of mentors from the industry and academic environment.
— There is definitely an educational focus, because while working on the project you still have to learn something new, which is necessary to continue working., — noted the mentor of one of the teams, a junior engineer at YADRO company and a graduate student at the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) of NSU Dmitry Muravyov. — The main task of a mentor is not to give a ready-made solution, but to guide and simplify the immersion process into the field as much as possible. When people face an insurmountable task and there is no one to help, they become frustrated and abandon projects. We track difficult points and help overcome them.
The selection for the program was as open as possible. The organizers invited all interested students, regardless of their faculty and field of study. There were no restrictions on the level of preparation or having a technical background — everyone could try themselves in a new direction.
This year, several projects are being developed in parallel as part of the bootcamp. One of the most ambitious tasks has become the development of an operating system in the Rust language. As the project supervisor, Associate Professor of FIT NSU, explained Dmitry Irtegov, the goal of writing the system from scratch in this language is attractive to students, and the main task of the bootcamp in this case is to recruit a team for further work during the academic year. According to him, the topics are so deep that they can serve as the basis for bachelor’s and master’s theses.
— The operating system kernel is the code that allows the computer to function and run programs. It is clear that we, as a small team, cannot compete with Linux or Windows, but it is quite possible to create a kernel for specialized hardware, for example, in real-time systems — explained the practical significance of the development, a master’s student of FIT NSU Nikolai Repin, who has been working on this project for more than a year.
Simultaneously, the team led by Dmitry Muravyov is working on creating an ESP-agent for telemetry collection. Essentially, the device functions as a “black box”: it records external parameters (power consumption and CPU heating) of the tested equipment without direct connection to it.
— Our task is to record the change in the device’s state and display it beautifully on the website. The telemetry collection system is extremely important during the verification and validation of devices. It allows us to ensure that the device fits within a certain thermal envelope and will not overheat, — explained Dmitry Muravyov.
Another team focused on studying platform performance. A third-year student of FIT NSU Nikita Romanenko told about his task:
— When the team was formed, we further divided internally into two subteams for specific tasks. We work with EIBOX, the second team works with Orange Pi. Our task is research, running benchmarks, finding differences between these two platforms. Yesterday we researched information about the platforms: processor, number of cores, RAM speed, caches. Today we have already divided by tasks: I am running the Stream benchmark, my colleagues are working on Tops. In the end, we will present the research methodology and a set of artifacts — scripts and code that we have collected. Our project is of interest to a specific division within the company YADRO, they will need our developments and conclusions.
On August 27, the final conference will be held, where teams will present their solutions and share their experiences working on the tasks. However, the organizers consider the main value of the bootcamp to be the opportunity for students to try themselves in a new field, find a topic for their thesis, or decide on an internship direction. Participants can also expect memorable gifts from the company.
According to the curators, many projects will continue to live on: students plan to continue development in the new academic year, and the best developments may find application in real YADRO company products.
