Chengdu, August 19 /Xinhua/ — Five people died and 17 others were injured as a result of a wall collapse that occurred on Tuesday in Sichuan Province in southwest China, local authorities reported on Wednesday.
The tragedy occurred around 17:30 in the courtyard of a house in one of the villages in Changning County of this province. Local residents held a banquet in their yard to celebrate their children’s admission to educational institutions. An investigation revealed that the collapse happened because a large amount of rainwater had accumulated on a temporary canopy attached to the wall, the local emergency management agency reported.
Three people died at the scene. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, they were unable to save the lives of two more injured individuals. Currently, 17 victims are undergoing treatment in the hospital. -0-
