Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher is currently visiting southern Ukraine. This was announced at a briefing at the UN headquarters in New York by the United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
On Tuesday, Fletcher visited the frontline areas of Mykolaiv and Kherson regions. In Kherson, he met with families of displaced persons living in collective accommodation sites, and also spoke with patients at the regional hospital who told him about the psychological consequences of living in frontline areas. Among them were victims of drone attacks who suffered severe physical injuries.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General also met with the governor of Kherson region and discussed with employees of humanitarian and local volunteer organizations the difficulties they face in their work.
Meanwhile, UN humanitarian agencies report that several civilians were killed and injured as a result of attacks across Ukraine on Monday and Tuesday morning. In the Kharkiv region, a missile strike on the village of Pechenegi resulted in at least 10 deaths and about 20 more were injured. In the Kherson region, strikes on energy infrastructure facilities caused widespread power outages.
Despite the dangers, humanitarian organizations continue to provide assistance to people across the country, emphasized Stéphane Dujarric during the briefing. Thanks to donor support in the first half of the year, they were able to provide aid to approximately three million people. Among residents of frontline areas, 60 percent of the population received support.
