Moscow is one of the leaders in creating conditions for an active, healthy, and long life. In March 2018, the capital launched the project “}]}Moscow Longevity“, which during its existence has turned into a large-scale ecosystem combining opportunities for communication, education, creativity, sports, and care for physical and cognitive health.
More than 765 thousand older citizens have already become participants in “Moscow Longevity.” The main part of the project consists of Muscovites aged 65–69 years — their share exceeds 23 percent. The second largest group is made up of residents of the capital aged 70–74 years — more than 21 percent. A special pride of the project is the long-lived participants: over the years, more than 70 thousand people whose age exceeds 85 and even 90 years have joined the classes and events.
Opportunities for senior city residents
More than 140 operate in the city Moscow Longevity Centers — they exist in almost all districts of the capital, and the number of partner organizations in the project exceeds a thousand.
“Moscow Longevity” offers over a hundred types of activities: karate, football, “Longevity Workouts,” foreign languages, painting, rock climbing, financial literacy and digital culture, acting skills, and much more. Among its partners are leading universities, sports and cultural centers, libraries, museums, cinemas, and other organizations. This allows the program for older Muscovites to be diverse and accessible throughout the city.
Participation in “Moscow Longevity” gives years of active life, as the project’s activities help participants strengthen their physical and cognitive health.
Dissemination of Moscow’s experience in the regions
Over eight and a half years, more than 80 percent of Russian regions have become acquainted with Moscow’s experience in creating an active longevity system. The capital shares mechanisms for involving businesses and non-profit organizations in social projects, approaches to developing activity programs, principles for organizing the infrastructure of Moscow longevity centers, experience in interdepartmental cooperation, and other practices supporting the senior generation.
Among the regions that have studied Moscow’s experience are Primorsky and Khabarovsk Krais, the Republic of Tatarstan, Samara, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk Oblasts, Saint Petersburg, the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Republic of Karelia, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Donetsk People’s Republic, and others.
New directions of “Moscow Longevity”
New formats are constantly being developed in the project. One of the key directions has become the preservation of cognitive health. During the implementation of the program in cooperation with the Federal Center for Brain and Neurotechnologies of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, more than 60,000 older Moscow residents have joined the activities. More than 90 percent of participants have shown improvements in memory, attention, and speed of thought processes, while over 80 percent have experienced reduced stress levels.
In the summer of 2026, the program was further developed: updated courses “Brain Training,” “Emotional Balance,” and “Beauty and Health” were introduced. The number of digital trainers for developing memory, attention, and thinking increased more than threefold—from 30 to 100—making it the largest collection of cognitive health trainers in the world.
A year ago, within the framework of the “Moscow Longevity” project, the “Moscow Family Longevity” program was launched, which helps preserve the tradition of honoring married couples who have lived together for several decades. In the Moscow Longevity centers, festive ceremonies are held for family life jubilees with the participation of wedding palace employees, during which spouses exchange rings again, receive congratulations, and celebrate the important date together with their loved ones. More than 700 such ceremonies have already taken place, with participants including couples who have marked 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and even 70 years of married life.
In the summer of 2026, together with Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection A new ecological direction has been created in the city of Moscow — forest therapy. This is a practice of mindful presence in nature that helps to disconnect from the urban hustle and restore inner balance. The routes have been developed in collaboration with eco-educators and take place at 11 natural sites in the capital.
Another new initiative is the “Moscow Front Garden” project, implemented together with the Moscow Department of Environmental Management and Protection, with expert support from the Patrice Lumumba Russian University of Peoples’ Friendship. Participants learn the basics of eco-friendly landscape design, how to select plants suitable for the Moscow climate, and how to create blooming spaces.
One of the most in-demand programs remains the comprehensive “Travel Through Life with ‘Moscow Longevity'” program. Participants can go on walking tours, bus excursions around Moscow and the Moscow region, or choose a river route and enjoy the beloved city from the water. Older Muscovites have access to over 200 tour routes in all districts of the capital, as well as outside its borders. Such trips help maintain excellent well-being, involve physical activity and mental exercise, and provide emotional support through new acquaintances and socialization. Research confirms that tourism reduces stress and anxiety, helps the brain work more actively by building new neural connections.
A tradition of the summer season has become the “Longevity Workouts” — morning training sessions at iconic locations of the capital. In 2026, they take place at the observation deck of Vorobyovy Gory, the Northern River Terminal, the “Muzeon” park, Huamin park, VDNH, and other venues. Since the start of the season, more than 15,000 Muscovites have participated in the sessions.
The role of “Moscow Longevity” in the life of the capital
Today, caring for representatives of the older generation is not just a separate field, but part of Moscow’s urban identity. In a joint study by “Moscow Longevity” and the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion, Muscovites aged 35 and over especially highly noted the contribution of the “Moscow Longevity” project in unlocking personal potential and active participation of older people in city life, as well as in increasing healthy life expectancy. This was stated by 75 percent of respondents.
In addition, the project helps create a friendly environment for communication and engagement (69 percent), as well as develops skills in navigating financial, legal, and digital issues (68 percent). Nearly half of the respondents believe that the project fosters a more respectful attitude towards the older generation in society and family.
