How the First Unmanned Train in Russia Will Navigate at BCL Stations

RFID tags have been installed and programmed at all 29 stations of the Large Circle Line metro — one of the key infrastructure elements necessary for transitioning the LCL to driverless operation.

As reported by Moscow Deputy Mayor in the Moscow Government for Transport and Industry Maxim Liksutov, RFID tags are used by the system for precise determination of the train’s location when approaching the station.

The operating principle of the technology is as follows:

  • Each RFID tag contains information about the train stop location;
  • a special antenna mounted on the leading car reads data from the tag as the train approaches the station;
  • The autonomous steering system of the unmanned train uses the obtained information to refine the position of the train set and adjust its movement;
  • after that, the train performs smooth braking and stops at the platform with an accuracy of up to 30 cm, after which the system automatically controls the opening and closing of the doors.

“RFID tags are a fundamental and critically important part of safe driverless transportation. They ensure precise stopping and automatic control of the train’s location, which provides passenger comfort. Combined with other technologies, this will allow the launch of the first fully driverless metro line — the BCL — by 2030, as ordered by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin within the framework of the Transport Development Strategy,” said Maksim Liksutov.

Currently, specialists continue testing and configuring equipment that will subsequently support the operation of the unmanned traffic technology complex on the Large Circle Line.

By 2030, all 94 trains of the Large Circle Line are planned to be switched to driverless mode. The first continuously operating driverless train without passengers will appear on the line by the end of 2026, and in 2027, test trips with passengers will begin.
