In recent years, the Liangjiang New District of Chongqing (translated from Chinese as “Two Rivers”, referring to the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers), relying on the unique terrain of a mountainous city, has been steadily advancing a project for the reuse of existing urban spaces. Long-unused “vacant areas” under bridges have been transformed into multifunctional mini-spaces combining fitness, public dining, leisure, and entertainment through systematic reconstruction.
To further improve the efficiency of space utilization under bridges, the Chongqing Sports Administration, in collaboration with several departments, has developed the Guidelines for Planning and Construction of Sports Facilities Under Bridges in the Central Urban Area, which provide for the construction of 162 sports facilities under bridges during the “15th Five-Year Plan” period (2026–2030). This will give a new impetus to the high-quality development of the city.
