Ebola outbreak in the DR Congo
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns: the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has spread to the sixth province. As of August 12, more than 4,660 cases have been confirmed, including 2,184 deaths. Meanwhile, UN agencies are scaling up assistance. The World Food Programme will begin providing hot meals to new Ebola treatment centers. Today, UN Deputy Humanitarian Chief Tom Fletcher announced an additional allocation of $30.5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to combat the outbreak.
Cholera in West and Central Africa
Fletcher also allocated one million dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund to support efforts to combat the cholera outbreak in northern Cameroon. This will strengthen measures for prevention and treatment of the disease, as well as provide the population with drinking water and sanitation services. According to the latest data, more than 1,250 cases of cholera have been reported in the country, with 31 deaths. The infection is rapidly spreading in West and Central Africa. Active outbreaks have been recorded in six countries in the region, the largest of which is in Nigeria.
Restrictions for girls and women in Afghanistan
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported today that over five years since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, more than 2.6 million girls have been deprived of the opportunity to receive secondary education. The UN agency warns that girls who do not attend school are at increased risk of exploitation, abuse, child marriage, and violence. Despite the existing restrictions, UNICEF continues to support educational programs in Afghanistan.
Attacks on healthcare facilities
This year, the World Health Organization has recorded 914 attacks on medical facilities and personnel, resulting in at least 911 deaths and 1,486 injuries. This amounts to more than four attacks every day. The health systems most affected by these attacks have been those of Ukraine, Lebanon, and the occupied Palestinian territory. Since the start of the full-scale war, WHO has confirmed over three thousand attacks on Ukrainian medical institutions, ambulances, and warehouses.
