Zhengzhou, August 14 /Xinhua/ — In Henan Province /Central China/, a dam breach was successfully sealed on Friday evening after nearly two days of emergency repair work. This was reported by local authorities.

A breach more than 40 meters wide occurred on the Baizhu River in Jiaxian County, Pingdingshan City, on the evening of August 12 after heavy rains caused the destruction of a section of the dam, forcing the evacuation of more than 2,000 people.

At present, no casualties have been reported.

Due to the narrowness of the road on this section of the dam, large construction machinery could not ascend it. On August 13, rescuers on both sides of the road lined up in two rows, forming two “human conveyor belts,” and passed bags filled with sand and gravel hand to hand to the breach site. Simultaneously, drones and rescue boats were employed to deliver bags of sand and gravel.

The breach was eliminated under conditions of widespread floods caused by heavy rains left by Typhoon Dolphin—the thirteenth tropical cyclone of the current season. In recent days, its impact was felt in many parts of Henan province.

The State Committee for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Assistance to Victims of the People’s Republic of China has activated a level 4 emergency response mode for natural disasters in the region. The central government has sent 30,000 essential items, including folding beds, summer quilts, and family emergency kits, to support rescue operations and evacuation of victims in the Zhoukou and Xuchang urban districts and other areas affected by the disaster. –0–
