In July, staff of the Department of Geotechnics at the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering served as co-organizers and participants of the 5th China-Russia Youth Forum on Underground Space Development and Geotechnics at Northeastern University in Shenyang.
The delegation included the scientific supervisor of the scientific and pedagogical school “Technology and Organization of Construction, Foundations and Bases, Underground Structures,” honored scientist of Russia, corresponding member of RAASN, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Rashid Mangushev, Head of the department, honored builder of Russia, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Anatoly Osokin and associate professor of the department, Candidate of Technical Sciences Maxim Paramonov.

The event was organized by the Tunnel and Underground Division of the Chinese Society of Civil Engineering, the Russian Tunnel Association, Shenyang Northeastern University, and the Russian University of Transport (MIIT). In addition to SPbGASU and RUT (MIIT), representatives from other Russian educational institutions also participated in the forum: Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (National Research University MGSU), St. Petersburg State University of Railway Transport (PGUPS), and Far Eastern State University of Railway Transport (DVGUUPS).
The forum brought together leading experts in geotechnics and underground construction to find modern solutions for the safe development of urban underground space.
The opening ceremony was attended by the consul-counselor of the General Consulate of Russia in Shenyang Alexander Smirnov. In his welcoming speech, he noted: “Young scientists are the driving force of science, and at all times the words ‘future’ and ‘youth’ have had the same meaning. In recent years, the development of the underground space exploitation sector in Russia and China has achieved impressive results. The most complex transport arteries are being built underground, unique foundations for skyscrapers are being constructed, the Arctic with its permafrost is being developed, and infrastructure is being created where until yesterday it seemed impossible.”
Professor Mangushev opened the forum with a report on “Foundations of unique buildings in Saint Petersburg.” In addition, within the event, a joint report by Rashid Mangushev and Anatoly Osokin was presented, titled “Reconstruction of historical buildings and architectural monuments with the arrangement of underground spaces beneath them under conditions of weak foundation soils.”
Maxim Paramonov in his speech highlighted issues of innovative calculations in the design and construction of foundations and underground structures on permafrost soils. He also participated in organizing and conducting classes of the summer school for students, master’s students, and graduate students of the Northeast University.
At the conclusion of the program, forum participants visited the metro station under construction in the city of Shenyang, where they got acquainted with the practical geotechnical solutions of their Chinese colleagues.
