In July 2026, the number of killed and wounded civilians exceeded the figures of any other month since March 2022, the United Nations Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine reported on Thursday.
According to the mission, at least 437 peaceful Ukrainians were killed in July and 2,610 were injured, which is 30 percent more than in the previous month and 70 percent more than in July 2025. At the same time, the number of child victims in July was higher than in any other month since April 2022.
“This year, the number of civilian casualties and wounded increased every month. In July, this trend sharply intensified,” said Mission Head Danielle Bell.
In the first seven months of 2026, 12,477 civilians were affected by violence related to the conflict in Ukraine (1,839 killed and 10,638 injured). This is 44 percent more than during the same period in 2025 (1,434 killed and 7,216 injured), and more than twice the figures for the same period in 2024 (1,188 killed and 4,560 injured).
The number of civilian casualties in the Russian Federation has also increased. Russian authorities reported that 79 civilians were killed and 601 injured in the country in July. The monitoring mission was unable to verify these figures in accordance with its verification standards due to lack of access and insufficient information.
Kyiv, where at least 54 civilians were killed and 202 were injured, became one of the hardest-hit cities in Ukraine in July, as the Russian armed forces significantly intensified the use of ballistic and cruise missiles. In July, Russia launched at least 429 missiles at Ukraine, more than twice the number in June.
In the deadliest strike in a month, which occurred on July 2, at least 30 civilians were killed and 104 were injured: Russian armed forces launched 74 missiles and nearly 500 long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, striking mainly Kyiv.
Long-range weapons (missiles and drones) accounted for the largest number of casualties – 38 percent (183 killed and 967 injured).
“The civilian population is facing increasing risks due to the broader use of missiles and drones in urban centers, planners bombing cities located closer to the frontline, as well as short-range drones,” Bell said.
“Taken together, these attacks are leading to an increase in civilian casualties in various regions of Ukraine,” she added.
According to data verified by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 16,874 peaceful Ukrainians have died since February 24, 2022, including 820 children, and 51,273 people have been injured, including 3,126 children.
