Beijing, August 7 /Xinhua/ — In November, the 33rd informal meeting of the leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation economies will be held in Shenzhen, southern China. China will once again warmly welcome high-ranking guests from around the world.
Over the past years, the country has held a series of major diplomatic events where world leaders gathered. These not only became platforms for dialogue but also demonstrated China’s vision regarding global cooperation, providing insight into the approach of the President of the PRC, Xi Jinping, to diplomacy.
For the head of China, receiving world leaders begins with hospitality.
In May 2023, on his birthday, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, arrived in China on a state visit and to participate in the first China — Central Asia summit. During the talks in the ancient city of Xi’an, Xi Jinping congratulated the guest on his 70th birthday.
“Your visit on such a special date says a lot about the strength of our bilateral relations and confirms your unique connection with China,” Xi Jinping said with a smile. “Thank you,” K.-Zh. Tokayev replied in Chinese.
As the great Chinese sage Confucius said: “Is it not a pleasure to meet a friend who has come from afar?”.
Whether it is meetings with old friends or new guests, Xi Jinping’s attentive approach has become a defining feature of China’s diplomacy as the host country, which has contributed to strengthening mutual trust and friendship.
However, these meetings are more than just hospitality. In conditions of global uncertainty, they have also served as platforms where China has called for dialogue, openness, and cooperation, presenting its proposals for solving common problems.
In 2016, China hosted the Group of Twenty (G20) summit for the first time. The event, chaired by Xi Jinping, became an important milestone in global economic governance.
At that summit, which gathered a record number of representatives from developing countries, development was prioritized for the first time in the global macro-political agenda. Its participants also approved an action plan to promote the implementation of the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development through 2030. For the first time, a collective commitment was made to support industrialization in Africa and the least developed countries.
These initiatives, along with the summit’s final documents, reflected China’s commitment to common development and shared prosperity.
While the modern world struggles with escalating conflicts as well as the rise of hegemonism, protectionism, and other global issues, Xi Jinping has chosen a number of major diplomatic events organized by China to put forward his key proposals.
The Global Security Initiative was presented at the Boao Forum for Asia 2022. It was then followed by the Global Civilization Initiative at the high-level dialogue between the CPC and other political parties worldwide in 2023, and the Global Governance Initiative at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin in 2025, as well as the Global Development Initiative at the meeting commemorating the 70th anniversary of the proclamation of the “Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence” in 2024.
These proposals are backed by concrete actions. Behind each summit is an intensive diplomatic agenda personally led by Xi Jinping.
On September 2, 2018, on the eve of the opening of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, Xi Jinping held 11 bilateral meetings with African leaders, with the schedule of each meeting planned to the minute.
At the G20 summit in Hangzhou in 2016, Xi Jinping participated in 13 meetings and various events over more than 80 hours, during which he delivered 11 speeches and met with 27 foreign leaders. At the SCO summit in Qingdao in 2018, he took part in more than 20 official events over two days.
The tightly packed schedule highlights not only the intensity of China’s diplomatic engagement but also Xi Jinping’s personal commitment to advancing international dialogue and cooperation.
China strives not only to put forward ideas, but also to bring them to life.
Since the launch of the “Belt and Road” initiative in 2013, it has brought nearly 1 trillion US dollars in global investments and created at least 500,000 jobs in the countries participating in the implementation of this initiative. In Africa and many other parts of the world, cooperation within the framework of the “Belt and Road” is widely regarded as a path to prosperity.
After successfully implementing 10 cooperation plans, eight major initiatives, and nine programs, Xi Jinping announced at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation a new positioning of China-Africa relations and 10 partnership action plans, opening a new chapter in the joint pursuit of modernization.
Over the past years, major diplomatic events held by China have marked the path along which China and the rest of the world have advanced together.
China, welcoming guests from around the world in Shenzhen, once again declares its commitment to cooperation with countries worldwide in order to strengthen consensus on issues of peace and development, enhance openness and interaction, and open a new chapter in building a community with a shared future for humanity.
