Beijing, August 7 /Xinhua/ — Military exercises organized by China, as well as law enforcement drills in the area of Huangyan Island and adjacent waters, served as a serious warning regarding violations and provocative actions by the Philippines, said Chen Xi, an official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense of the People’s Republic of China, on Friday.

He made this statement in response to a media request to comment on China conducting the aforementioned maneuvers and exercises in the territorial waters of Huangyan Island and airspace above it, as well as in the adjacent areas, which followed the Philippines’ submission to the UN of its so-called “official maritime map of Huangyan Island and adjacent maritime zones.”

Emphasizing that Huangyang Island has been Chinese territory since ancient times, Chen Xi pointed out that China has continuously, peacefully, and effectively exercised sovereignty and jurisdiction over Huangyang Island and is the only country entitled to declare the baseline of territorial waters of Huangyang Island in accordance with international law.

The relevant actions of the Philippines seriously violate China’s territorial sovereignty, as well as international law and the fundamental norms of international relations, Chen Xi stated.

According to him, the corresponding exercises and drills organized by the Chinese side serve as a serious warning regarding offenses and provocative actions by the Philippines, being necessary and legitimate measures to uphold sovereignty over Huangyan Island and protect its rights and interests.

“We strongly urge the Philippine side to immediately cease illegal actions that violate China’s territorial sovereignty and its maritime rights and interests, to stop provocative acts at sea and the stirring up of related issues,” said the official representative of the Ministry of Defense.

The Chinese armed forces will take decisive and effective countermeasures against any provocative attempts to stir up trouble and sow discord in the South China Sea, he concluded. -0-
