Beijing, August 6 /Xinhua/ — On Wednesday, the Ministry of Commerce of China announced the initiation of a national security investigation into imported office equipment with printing and copying functions, equipped with foreign system software.
According to the ministry’s statement, preliminary information indicates that such imported office equipment may jeopardize national security interests in the field of foreign trade.
Foreign system software is understood to mean drivers and embedded software developed, tested, or supported by foreign individuals or legal entities, the statement says.
The investigation will examine the following aspects: the importation of the products under investigation; the impact of imported goods, technologies, or services on national security interests; domestic demand in the relevant sectors and the degree of dependence on foreign goods, technologies, or services; the state of development of the relevant domestic industries and the effect of imports on them; as well as the capabilities and level of these industries in meeting domestic demand and ensuring national security interests.
In addition, during the investigation, the impact of relevant political measures by foreign governments on China’s national security interests, as well as any other issues affecting national security interests in foreign trade, will be assessed, the ministry noted.
The investigation may be conducted using written questionnaires, hearings, field inspections, or checks by authorized organizations. Based on the results obtained, the ministry will prepare an investigation report or issue a resolution to settle the case, as well as publish a corresponding statement.
This investigation must be completed within 12 months from the date of publication of the notice of its initiation, and the period may be extended under special circumstances.
Interested parties may submit their written comments on issues related to the initiation of the investigation and the procedure for its conduct within 30 days from the date of the notice publication, the ministry reported. -0-
