On the night of August 4 to 5, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a large-scale strike using ballistic missiles and long-range drones, which mainly hit Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast. This was announced today by the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian authorities, at least 17 civilians were killed as a result of the attack, and another 44 were injured. Several people died on the railway platform in the Brovarsky district of the Kyiv region.

“The latest attack was part of a series of large-scale strikes carried out this summer on Kyiv, which had devastating consequences for the civilian population,” said mission head Danielle Bell. “The increasing use of ballistic missiles and other long-range weapons in populated areas is leading to a rise in civilian casualties and causing extensive damage to residential buildings, businesses, and other civil infrastructure facilities.”
According to the mission, 1,396 Ukrainian civilians were killed in the first six months of 2026, and another 7,978 were injured. This is 37 percent more than the same period in 2025, and 114 percent higher than the 2024 figure.
The increase in the number of casualties, experts from the mission note, is mainly linked to long-range attacks by the Russian Federation, which predominantly affected urban areas located far from the front line. From January to June, the number of civilian casualties caused by the use of long-range weapons, including rockets and drones, increased by 60 percent compared to the same period last year.
Experts from the Monitoring Mission will visit the strike sites to verify information about the number of fatalities, injuries, and the extent of the damage caused.
Large-scale attacks
According to the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, August began with two large-scale night attacks. He also reminded that the previous month became the deadliest for the country’s civilian population since April 2022.
“In densely populated areas of the Kyiv region and Kyiv, civilians have died, and the lives of the population have been disrupted,” emphasized Shmale.
“Search and rescue teams continue their work tirelessly, and humanitarian organizations are providing aid to those affected,” the statement says.
He noted that intensive attacks affected other regions of the country as well. In Kramatorsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, dozens of residents, including children, were killed and injured as a result of airstrikes and drone attacks. Residential homes, schools, public transport, water supply systems, and humanitarian warehouses were damaged.
“As the attacks continue, more and more families are losing loved ones, leaving their homes, or trying to rebuild their lives,” Schmale said.
He reminded that international humanitarian law requires the parties to the conflict to take all necessary precautions to protect the civilian population and civilian infrastructure.
“Civilians across Ukraine must be able to live, work, and raise their children without fearing new attacks,” emphasized the UN representative.
