Sergey Sobyanin took part in the events of the 5th International Transport Summit. The Mayor of Moscow spoke about unique projects that have made the city’s transport one of the best in the world.
Today, Moscow is one of the world leaders in transport development dynamics. In recent years, the capital has built lines and stations of ground and underground metro, two rings of ground metro, and the world’s largest underground ring — the Large Circle Line.
“All of this, of course, required colossal resources, their concentration, reduction, optimization of current expenses, and the allocation of budgetary, human, engineering, and personnel resources to solve this task. The President of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation, and Russian Railways actively helped us to address this problem,” said the Mayor of Moscow.
In addition to solving local transportation issues, it was necessary to change the entire development ideology of the capital so that work, various services, trade facilities, education, and healthcare would be within walking distance. To achieve this, the entire city planning, master plan, and general plan had to be restructured. Over the past years, around two million new jobs have been created in the residential districts of the capital.
“This has significantly reduced the load on the city center. In addition, chords were created that do not pass through the city center, allowing movement from one end of the city to the other, bypassing the central part. This is also a large, complex task, considering that Moscow is a very densely built city. And carrying out such transport communications through the historic part was, of course, extremely difficult,” emphasized Sergey Sobyanin.
New public spaces
Thousands of courtyards, streets, parks, and squares have been improved in Moscow. The number of pedestrians on Moscow’s streets has increased four to five times. The city has become comfortable for both motorists and pedestrians. The environmental situation has also improved. This was facilitated by changes in the requirements for vehicles entering the city.
“The development of public spaces has made it possible to lead a healthy lifestyle. Quality healthcare services have been established in every district of the city for Moscow residents. The same has happened in the field of education. We set the task so that not only exclusive schools but also schools in every district provide quality education. This allowed citizens not to transport their children from one district to another but to receive quality education directly at their place of residence,” noted the Mayor of Moscow.
Moscow is a recognized cultural center. Today, cultural life extends far beyond the well-known venues. Music plays in the metro, at train stations, in transportation hubs, and on the roads. “Culture has taken a step forward to be close to the citizens, close to the passengers,” added Sergey Sobyanin.
Transport Security
Today, Moscow is a leader in terms of transport security. The city has become safer thanks to new technologies, a facial recognition system, video cameras, and road surveillance.
“For example, car thefts, which were rampant back in 2010 with 10 thousand cars stolen annually in Moscow, have become such an exotic type of crime today that they make up a very tiny fraction — this type of crime has decreased by 47 times. Thanks to city-wide video surveillance systems, burglaries from apartments, for instance, have decreased 64 times. The city as a whole has become much calmer and safer. All of this together has allowed serious economic development to continue,” noted the Mayor of Moscow.
International Transport Summit
The International Transport Summit is the largest expert platform, bringing together city leaders, industry leaders, and recognized experts in the field of transport technologies and industry. It is taking place in Moscow on August 3 and 4.
The event is organized By the Department of Transport and Road Transport Infrastructure Development of the City of Moscow with the support of the capital’s Committee on Tourism and Department of Investment and Industrial Policy.
The International Transport Summit was held for the first time in 2019. In August 2025, it was attended by more than 140 delegates from 43 major cities around the world. Moscow signed 19 agreements with foreign megacities, including memorandums of cooperation in the field of transport with Beijing and Bangkok.
