In To the Vasily Nesterenko Gallery with the support of the capital city Department of Culture On August 6, a series of cultural and educational evenings will begin. It will be dedicated to the history of European and Russian musical art. The project will combine concert lectures, in which works from different eras will be performed by the ensemble “MonteVerde” and will be accompanied by stories about history, artistic traditions, spiritual and secular culture of the past.
The first evening of the series — “Gallant Russia” — will take place on August 6. The program includes works of Russian sacred and secular music of the 17th–19th centuries. The second concert-lecture — “Renaissance: history captured in music” — will take place on August 20.
“Gallant Russia” will acquaint listeners with the main stages of the formation of Russian musical culture. The halls of the gallery will feature works reflecting the development of domestic music — from the spiritual tradition to the first examples of secular lyricism.
Guests will hear examples of ancient Russian polyphony, including “Sveti Tikhiy” (Znamenny polyphony), “Arkhangelsky Glas” (troestrochie), and “Pridite Poklonimsya” (demestvo), as well as get acquainted with Peter’s cantatas — one of the most striking phenomena of the era of reforms. The program features spiritual chants, lyrical works, and navigational songs reflecting changes in the musical culture of early 18th century Russia.
A special place in the concert will be occupied by the works of Grigory Teplov from the collection “Between Business and Idleness” — the first domestic author’s vocal anthology. Also to be performed is the composition “Borodino Battle” by Nikolai Churkin, dedicated to one of the significant events in Russian history.
The musical program will be complemented by comments from Alexander Grebenyukov, an artist of the MonteVerde ensemble, who will talk about the historical context of the works and the characteristics of the musical traditions of different eras.
