The narrowing of civil space in Serbia, accompanied by attacks on critics of the authorities, as well as restrictions on freedom of the media and expression of opinions, causes serious concern. This was stated on Thursday by the UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk.

Reports of increasing violence, intimidation of voters, and procedural violations, including police raids on opposition sites, during the recent local elections raise questions about the integrity of the electoral process and the atmosphere in which it took place.

Tyurk also noted that in the country journalists are persecuted and attempts are made to restrict press freedom.

“I call on the authorities to ensure respect for the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, as well as to protect the freedom of the media,” emphasized Tiórk.

He called for ensuring a transparent and impartial investigation of the alleged human rights violations, as well as holding the guilty accountable, which will help restore public trust in the institutions of power.
