Shenzhen, August 4 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, a power unit equipped with the third-generation Chinese-designed “Hualong-1” reactor was put into commercial operation in Guangdong Province in southern China, the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) announced.
The commissioning of the second power unit marks the completion and full launch of the first phase of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant, which represents the first nuclear project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area region to employ the Hualong One reactor technology. The first power unit of this project was commissioned in April of this year.
The project, located in Huizhou City, Huizhou County, consists of six Hualong-1 power units. In April 2019, state approval was obtained for the construction of two power units as part of the first phase. In October 2020, construction of the project’s second power unit began.
As informed by Zhang Guoqiang, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Huizhou Company under CGN, the mentioned two power units are expected to generate 18 billion kWh of electricity annually, which can meet the yearly industrial and residential electricity needs of nearly 2 million people. This is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 16.63 million tons per year.
The Hualong One reactor meets the highest global safety standards and represents an important milestone in the innovative development of China’s nuclear energy sector.
According to experts, the completion of the first phase of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant project is an important step in strengthening the supply capacity of clean energy for the Greater Bay Area region and advancing towards achieving the country’s “dual carbon goals”.
According to the plan recently announced by the National Development and Reform Commission of China and the National Energy Administration of China, by 2030, a new system will mainly be established in China aimed at ensuring environmentally clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient development of the country’s energy sector.
The document provides for the active and orderly development of nuclear energy with a priority on safety, and also sets a goal to achieve an installed capacity of operating nuclear power units at about 110 GW by 2030.
