Tehran, July 31 /Xinhua/ — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday called on Bulgaria and Cyprus not to allow the United States to use military bases on their territory for attacks on the Islamic Republic, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.
In a telephone conversation with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova, A. Aragchi stated that the approval by the Bulgarian parliament of the deployment of American tanker aircraft at the Bezmer airbase to support “aggressive operations against Iran” violates international law and bilateral friendly relations.
He referred to UN General Assembly Resolution 3314, which considers providing territory for aggression against a third state as an act of aggression.
V. Petrova-Chamova noted that Bulgaria does not intend to participate in a war against Iran and supports diplomacy aimed at reducing tensions in the region.
During the conversation with the Cypriot Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos, A. Araghchi emphasized the need to prevent the unlawful use of foreign bases in Cyprus for aggression against Iran.
K. Kombos stated that Cyprus contacted the United Kingdom to ensure that the British bases on the island would not be used against any country.
On July 22, the Bulgarian parliament, despite opposition from local mayors, approved the deployment of eight American KC-135 refueling aircraft at the Bezmer airbase from July 24 to October 1.
