Shanxi, April 9 /Xin Hua/ — According to information from the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the 8th International Team Chess Tournament among the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) started on Wednesday in the Qinpu area of the Chinese megalopolis of Shanghai.

Teams from 12 SCO countries participate in the competition, including China, Russia, Belarus, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. In particular, China is represented by two teams, which include such grandmasters as former world champion Ding Liren and the reigning world champion Zhu Wenjun.

This tournament is conducted according to the regulations of rapid chess competitions, all teams will be divided into two groups, in which a preliminary round using a round-robin system will take place. The two best teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.

The international team chess tournament among the SCO countries was established in 2019. The first 5 tournaments were held in the city of Qingdao, Shandong Province /Eastern China/, the next two – in Harbin, and the 8th event was held for the first time in Shanhaiguan, where the SCO was founded.

The organizers noted that holding the event will allow for deeper practical cooperation in the field of chess and cards between the SCO countries, as well as contribute to raising the level of sportsmanship in the sphere of regional projects and expanding international exchanges.

The organizers of the current tournament are the Chess and Card Affairs Center under the General Administration for Physical Culture and Sports of the PRC, the Chess Association of China, the Physical Culture and Sports Administration of the city of Shanghai, and the government of the Qinpu district. -0-
