Beijing, July 29 /Xinhua/ — The survey of fishery resources by the mainland China in the waters east of Taiwan Island is “completely justified and legal,” said Chen Binhua, an official spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC, on Wednesday.
Chen Binghua made this statement at a routine agency press conference in response to the remarks by the Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration that the survey was a deliberate attempt to “establish” jurisdiction. The DPP administration also used the survey to call for support for the relevant budgets for maritime patrol and defense.
The survey conducted from July 17 to 23 by a vessel of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences was aimed at a comprehensive assessment of fishery resources in waters under China’s jurisdiction and to provide a scientific basis for the sustainable development of marine fisheries, said Chen Binhua.
“This is normal scientific work that benefits both shores of the strait,” he added.
An official representative dismissed the criticism of the DPP administration as unfounded, calling the effort to increase the naval forces’ budget a “political manipulation” aimed at stirring antagonism and confrontation on both sides of the strait.
