SPbGASU Team The project by students of the Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, “BIM Design of a High-Rise Residential Building in Saint Petersburg According to the Requirements of the Setl Group Holding,” won first place in the nomination “Student Works. TIM in Residential Buildings” at the 10th All-Russian Competition with International Participation “TIM-LEADERS 2025/26.” The victory was the result of joint work by students from various fields of study, university faculty, and specialists from one of the largest Russian developers.
The “TIM-LEADERS” competition is held with the support of the Russian Ministry of Construction and for ten years has united the best practices of applying information modeling technologies in construction, annually showcasing the most successful digital solutions implemented by representatives of the professional community, educational institutions, and domestic software developers. In the anniversary season, more than 160 projects were submitted to the competition from 30 cities and regions of Russia. In the “Student Works” section, 55 projects from 16 specialized universities across the country competed for the victory.
Summing up the contest results. TIM in Residential Buildings” was the SPbGASU project dedicated to the design of a high-rise residential building according to the requirements of the Setl Group holding. The author team worked under the guidance of a senior lecturer Alexandra Ivanova. The team included Sofiya Biryulya, Edgar Barsegyan, Vladislav Gaydash, Eva Podyacheva, Laima Ezerina, Svetlana Ustinovich, Vladimir Belov, Dmitry Lvov, Ekaterina Efimova and Darya Korneyeva.
However, winning the all-Russian competition was not an isolated achievement, but the result of extensive project work carried out throughout the academic year.
The project was implemented within the framework of project-based learning at SPbGASU with the participation of the Setl Group holding — one of the university’s key industrial partners. The company acted as the client for the educational case, proposing that students solve a task as close as possible to those daily faced by project organizations.
The project work was carried out using the Russian information modeling system Renga. Students from different faculties, specialties, and years worked simultaneously within a unified digital model. This format not only allowed mastering modern information modeling tools but also established interaction between project participants in the same way as it occurs in professional project teams.
The participants distributed the areas of work among themselves, made project decisions together, created a unified information space, and regularly discussed the progress of the project with representatives of Setl Group. The company’s experts accompanied the team throughout the entire process, helping students take into account the requirements imposed on the design of residential facilities in real practice.
This format of interaction between the university and the employer is one of the strengths of project-based learning at SPbGASU. Students have the opportunity not only to apply the knowledge gained in the classrooms but also to work on engineering tasks that closely resemble real production conditions. At the same time, they master modern domestic digital tools, learn to work in a team, interact with specialists from various fields, and make comprehensive project decisions.
The development of information modeling technologies is one of the university’s priority areas. SPbGASU consistently integrates BIM into the educational process, implements joint projects with leading companies in the construction industry, organizes specialized conferences, championships, and educational intensives, and also creates conditions for developing digital competencies in future engineers, architects, and designers.
Special attention at the university is given to cooperation with industry partners. It is precisely thanks to such interaction that students gain experience working with current digital technologies, become familiar with employer requirements, and during their studies become participants in real engineering projects.
The high evaluation of the project at the “TIM-LEADERS 2025/26” competition can be seen as a confirmation of the effectiveness of this training model. The work of SPbGASU students was recognized as the best among projects from specialized universities in Russia in the category dedicated to information modeling of residential buildings.
This is not the university’s first successful experience participating in the “TIM-LEADERS” competition. In previous years, projects by students of SPbGASU have also become prize-winners of the competition, confirming the high level of training of future specialists in the field of information modeling technologies. The latest victory demonstrates that project-based learning, close interaction with industry partners, and the use of domestic digital solutions enable students to successfully solve professional tasks and represent the university with distinction at the all-Russian level.
