Beijing, July 28 /Xinhua/ — Thanks to the improvement in the economic situation and the growth of the Producer Price Index (PPI), China’s tax revenues for the first half of 2026 increased by 4.9 percent compared to the same period last year and exceeded 10 trillion yuan (approximately 1.47 trillion USD), the State Taxation Administration of China reported on Tuesday.
The specified figure does not include value-added tax on imports, consumption tax, customs duties, and tonnage tax levied by customs authorities, and is presented before deduction of tax refunds upon export.
The total revenue from taxes and fees in the country for the period from January to June reached 16.7 trillion yuan, announced Hu Jinglin, head of the State Taxation Administration of China, at a press conference. During the same period, contributions to the social insurance fund amounted to 4.5 trillion yuan, and non-tax revenues totaled 1.8 trillion yuan.
The official explained the increase in the indicator by stable economic figures, the continued growth of the PPI, which is closely related to tax revenues, as well as the dynamic development of some emerging areas and key industries. In the first half of 2026, China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
The data released on Tuesday also indicate that during this period the volume of tax benefits and exemptions provided by the government in the interests of the population in the fields of pension provision, healthcare, education, and employment increased by 11.8 percent year-on-year. 126 million taxpayers took advantage of additional deductions from individual income tax for expenses including elderly care, healthcare, and education, which is 5.9 percent more than a year earlier.
Meanwhile, according to the administration, on July 1 of this year, a nationwide pilot project was expanded to insure employees in new forms of employment against occupational accidents. So far, a total of 29.1 million people have used it. -0-
