Tbilisi, July 27 /Xinhua/ — The total volume of cargo handled by sea ports and terminals of Georgia in the first six months of 2026 increased by 22 percent year-on-year and reached 9.7 million tons, marking the highest figure for the first half of the year in the last decade. This was reported on Monday by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
According to the agency, during the reporting period, the country’s seaports handled 409,397 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) of cargo, which is 9 percent more year-on-year. This figure also became a record for the past ten years.
As noted by the ministry, new types of cargo have appeared in the freight flow structure, which were not transported the previous year, including steel, various types of pipes, gold and copper concentrates, and a number of liquid cargos.
In addition, according to the department, from January to June 2026 the volume of goods transported by Georgian railways increased by 10% compared to the same period last year and reached 6.9 million tons, which also became the highest figure for the first half of the year in the last decade. The growth in railway transportation volume was accompanied by an increase in indicators across all main directions, including import, export, transit, and domestic shipments. –0–
