Paris, April 9 /Xin Hua/ — French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday condemned the recent strikes by Israel on Lebanon, emphasizing that a ceasefire must be fully implemented in the Middle East.
France “most decisively” condemns Israel’s “indiscriminate strikes” on Lebanon, carried out on Wednesday and causing a “very large number of civilian casualties,” said E. Macron on the social network X on Monday after a telephone conversation with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
These strikes “create a direct threat to the sustainability of the recently achieved ceasefire regime. The ceasefire must be fully extended to Lebanon,” noted the French leader.
According to the latest data provided by the Civil Defense of Lebanon, as a result of the Israeli strike on Wednesday on Lebanese territory, at least 254 people were killed, another 1165 were injured, with the most severely affected being the densely populated neighborhoods of the country’s capital — Beirut.
E. Macron also held a conversation with the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump on Wednesday after the announcement of the ceasefire.
“I told them both that the decision to agree to a ceasefire was the best of all possible options,” he said on the social network X.
“I expressed hope that the ceasefire regime would be fully observed by each of the warring parties in every section of the conflict, including in Lebanon,” emphasized the President of France.
On Wednesday morning, a two-week ceasefire agreement between the USA and Iran came into effect. Israel noted that it would observe the truce, but insisted that its operation would not extend to Lebanon, while Pakistan, which acted as an intermediary in concluding the agreement, announced the opposite.
