Tashkent, July 27 /Xinhua/ — Ten objects of Tashkent modernism have been included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage list. The corresponding decision was approved on Sunday at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in the South Korean city of Busan, the Uzbek Agency for Cultural Heritage reported on Monday.
The national nomination “Architecture of Tashkent Modernism. Modernism and Traditions of Central Asia” includes 10 striking architectural monuments from the second half of the 20th century. Among them are the residential building “Zhemchug,” the State Museum of the History of Uzbekistan, the Palace of Arts “Friendship of Peoples,” the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan, the building of the Tashkent State Circus, the Central Exhibition Hall of the Academy of Arts, the National Palace of Cinematic Arts, the Chorsu bazaar, the Kosmonavtov metro station, as well as the Sun heliocomplex in the Tashkent region.
The specialized department emphasized that these objects represent a unique synthesis of innovative architectural solutions of their time with the national traditions of Central Asia.
This ensemble became the sixth cultural heritage site of Uzbekistan on the UNESCO list and the first individual national nomination of the country to receive this status in the last 25 years. Moreover, Uzbekistan became the first country in Central Asia and the CIS region to include the architectural heritage of 20th-century modernism in the UNESCO World Heritage list. –0–
